UK Q3 GDP growth better than expected: reaction

Britain's economy grew by 0.5pc in the last quarter, beating economists' expectations, but reigniting fears that Britain could still slip into recession. Here's how analysts reacted:

Adam Clifford, William Albert Securities:


  1. This better than expected figure will provide a flicker of hope to some, but is likely to be short-lived.
  2. The Government will proclaim that growth is coming, but we believe that what's coming is quite the opposite.
  3. In the short to medium term we remain very bearish on the economy and believe a double-dip is a strong possibility next year.

Output in Britain rose by half a per cent in the third quarter of this year - better than the City expected but dismally short of what is needed to meet the Chancellor's growth targets.
